Therapeutic Support

Heads in Herts provides support to children, adolescents and young adults aged 0-25 who are struggling with their mental health. We use a variety of evidence-based therapeutic approaches to  support young people, which are all provided by fully qualified, HCPC registered Clinical Psychologists who specialise in working with children and young people.

What difficulties can we support with?

Anxiety

Eating Disorders

Phobias

Depression / Low Mood

Body Dysmorphia

Autism

OCD

Emotional Regulation

ADHD

Low Self-Esteem

Panic Attacks

Tics / Tourette's

These difficulties will present differently for everybody, and it is really common for young people to experience one or more of the difficulties listed above, which is why it is so important to us that we get to know each young person as an individual. We use the information gathered in our initial assessment appointment to start to create an individualised formulation, or care plan, to guide our decision making about which therapeutic intervention is likely to be most effective.

Which Therapies do we offer?

Once we have a good understanding of your difficulties, and what you would like to be different, we can begin our therapeutic work together. Clinical Psychologists are trained in a wide range of different therapeutic models; the main therapeutic models we use in our work are: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy and Systemic Family Therapy.

As qualified Clinical Psychologists, we are highly skilled at adapting therapeutic models to meet the needs of young people who may have additional needs such as ADHD, Autism, or learning difficulties. We can also offer psychoeducational sessions for young people or their families who may have received a recent diagnoses of any of these disorders.

What will therapy look like?

All therapy appointments last for approximately 60 minutes, and usually take place weekly or fortnightly. Appointments can take place online, face-to-face, or a mixture of both depending on your needs and preferences. We recommend meeting weekly at first, and then spreading out sessions as things start to feel more manageable.

Although there is no limit to the number of times we can meet, we find that it is beneficial to agree an approximate number of sessions in advance. We will review our support after 12 sessions and decide together if we would like to extend for another 6-12 sessions. As per the treatment guidelines for most of the difficulties listed above, we would usually recommend meeting for 12-24 sessions, although this can be shorter or longer depending on your preference and level of need.
